About Rt Hon Lord (David) Blunkett
The Right Honourable Lord Blunkett has dedicated over 40 years to public service, rising from local government to some of the highest offices in the United Kingdom. Born blind and raised in challenging circumstances, he overcame significant adversity to study at the University of Sheffield before becoming the youngest ever councillor in that city. His subsequent leadership of Sheffield City Council paved the way for a distinguished parliamentary career that spanned 28 years in the House of Commons.
During his time in government, Lord Blunkett held several critical cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Education and Employment and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. As Home Secretary during the period surrounding 11 September 2001, he managed a vast remit covering counter-terrorism, immigration, and justice. Today, he continues his contribution to public life in the House of Lords and serves as a Professor of Politics in Practice at the University of Sheffield, as well as holding the role of Chair of the board at the University of Law.
Lord Blunkett is a highly regarded commentator on the geopolitical landscape, social responsibility, and the nuances of change management. He draws upon a lifetime of navigating complex political terrains to offer audiences unique perspectives on diversity, inclusion, and personal determination. His sessions are valued for their blend of professional authority, entertaining anecdotes from his years in Westminster, and a deep understanding of modern leadership challenges.
