About David Harewood
David Harewood OBE is a distinguished British actor and presenter whose illustrious career spans over three decades across stage, television, and film. Since February 2024, he has served as the President of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the same institution where he trained following his time with the National Youth Theatre. He is widely recognised for high-profile television roles such as David Estes in Homeland and his portrayal of J'onn J'onzz in Supergirl, a series that also marked his directorial debut. His film career includes notable performances in Blood Diamond and The Merchant of Venice, and in 1997, he made history as the first Black actor to perform the title role in Othello at the National Theatre.
Beyond his acting achievements, David has become a prominent advocate for social change and mental health awareness. Through his powerful memoir, Maybe I Don’t Belong Here, and various documentary projects for the BBC such as Psychosis and Me, he explores the intersection of race, identity, and clinical recovery. His work extends to supporting UNICEF and investigating systemic injustices in documentaries like Black is the New Black and Could Britain Ever Have a Black Prime Minister? Recently, he has expanded his creative influence into modern media, providing voices for prominent video games including Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Alan Wake II.
David is booked by global audiences for his profound ability to blend personal storytelling with professional excellence. He offers a unique perspective on resilience and cultural progress, delivering a compelling narrative that resonates across both the corporate and creative sectors.
On stage, David Harewood is best known for talks on Mental Health, Race and Identity, Activism, Acting and Directing. Audiences leave with a clear, practical view of the subject rather than a generic overview — every keynote is shaped around the brief and the room.
