About Karen Darke
Karen Darke is a celebrated Paralympic gold medallist and record-breaking explorer who specialises in the psychology of high performance. At the age of 21, a climbing accident resulted in paralysis from the chest down, yet she refused to let physical constraints limit her ambitions. Since then, she has navigated some of the most unforgiving terrains on Earth, including a 1,200-mile kayak journey through the Alaska-Canada coastline and a 600km crossing of the Greenland ice cap in temperatures as low as -40°C. Her expeditions have also seen her hand-cycle across the Himalayas and traverse the challenging mountain ranges of Central Asia.
Her sporting career is marked by incredible tenacity and elite success. After taking up para-cycling, she secured a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympics in the H1-2 time trial. Following a major injury in 2013 that affected her ability to use her right arm, she showcased remarkable resilience by returning to the world stage to win gold at the Rio 2016 Games in the H2-3 time trial. In recognition of her significant contributions to sport and her ongoing inspirational work, she was appointed an MBE in the 2017 New Year Honours.
Today, Karen translates her experiences of overcoming extreme adversity into powerful strategies for business and personal growth. She specialises in change management and inclusive leadership, helping organisations foster a mindset of adaptability and peak performance. Audiences book her for her unique ability to combine extraordinary adventure stories with practical psychological principles that transform how teams perceive and tackle modern challenges.
On stage, Karen Darke is best known for talks on Resilience, Change Management, Diversity & Inclusion and Peak Performance. Audiences leave with a clear, practical view of the subject rather than a generic overview — every keynote is shaped around the brief and the room.
Their work resonates with leaders across Personal Development and Sport, where the themes translate directly into team decisions, customer experience and growth strategy.
Karen Darke is regularly booked for Motivational Speaker and Business Speaker, adapting tone, length and format to suit the event — from a 20-minute opener to a full conference keynote with Q&A.
Based in UK, Karen Darke travels internationally for engagements.
