About Richard Ayoade
Richard Ayoade is a BAFTA-winning actor, writer, and director who rose to prominence through the Cambridge Footlights, serving as the society's President. He is widely recognised for his portrayal of Maurice Moss in the celebrated sitcom The IT Crowd, a performance that earned him the 2014 BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance. His early work includes co-creating the cult supernatural parody Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, which transitioned to television after winning the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has also featured in influential comedies such as Nathan Barley and The Mighty Boosh.
Transitioning seamlessly behind the camera, Richard has established himself as a respected voice in independent cinema. He wrote and directed the acclaimed coming-of-age drama Submarine and the black comedy The Double. His creative versatility extends to bibliography, having authored several humorous film studies and the 2022 children's book, The Book That No One Wanted to Read. His recent work remains prolific, including a current voice role in the animated series Krapopolis and contributions to major films such as The Bad Guys and Soul.
As a presenter, Richard has brought his signature deadpan wit to major programmes including Travel Man, Gadget Man, and the revival of The Crystal Maze. Beyond these staples, he is a mainstay of popular television panel shows such as The Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Audiences book Richard for his unique comic timing, his profound understanding of the creative arts, and his ability to engage viewers with a distinct and intelligent perspective on modern culture.
